Head coach: Dimitar Penev

The 1998-1999 season passes under the sign of the European campaign. Dimitar Penev took over a very young CSKA team and made a remarkable breakthrough in the UEFA Cup. The "Army men"eliminated Belshina Bobruisk, Molde (Norway), Servette Geneva and reach matches against Atletico Madrid. The clashes against the Spaniards turn into a real football fiesta.

This way CSKA manages something that no other Bulgarian team had done after 1990 and eliminated three opponents in Europe.

CSKA finished 5th but won the Cup of Bulgaria after a win over Litex with a goal by Valentin Stanchev.

The strong performance in Europe opened the way for another group of red talents to the biggest European teams. Stilian Petrov was sold to Celtic and Martin Petrov continued his career at Servette.
